Three centuries after catastrophe reshaped Aventainya, the Church of Tain rules a civilization that credits its god with saving the world. Beyond the comforts of its settlements, six sellslingers known as the Traveling Goodberries seek their fortunes amid ancient forests, deadly magic, and the lingering legacies of dragons. Their search for paying work becomes a journey through Dragon Delves, my first foray into using modules within my homebrew campaign of 40 years.
The party arrived in the mountain village of Graysmere and met Oriann, who hired them to investigate grave disturbances and theft at an old Shadow Scholar temple. The Church of Tain refuses to interfere. After Aragog summoned a fey raven named Nevermore and the group slept at the inn, they trekked through the snow to the temple entrance. Q and Vel scouted ahead, spotting a cultist commanding undead workers, leading to a fierce ambush. After clearing the initial chamber, the party discovered a torture room where a wraith emerged after disturbing the body of a tiefling, draining Aragog, Vel and Thorik's vitality before fleeing through a wall. It remains at large. They recovered a mysterious black wand and several keys before entering a vast, incense-filled ceremonial chamber with an enormous statue of the Shadow Scholar where they now stand, listening to movement in a nearby connected room to the south.
The party tracked a missing wyrmling named Briochebane to a bizarre cottage made of sweets. After battling chocolate cockatrices that turned Aragog into a statue, they faced acid-throwing dryads in the woods. Descending through a trapdoor, the group fought gingerbread people, an animated rug, and a giant wooden doll named Bubba Wugga while avoiding a cursed Gummy Mummy. They eventually incapacitated the man controlling the dragon, rescued a boy named Ed - Edith's brother, unaged since she betrayed him and tricked him into a deal with the hag Uncle Nibblecheeck - from his bubblegum prison, and returned everyone to safety before the candy house collapsed. Ed was adopted by Fill Flourforge. Edith was arrested by the constable/innkeeper. The party collected their rewards, dubbed themselves the Traveling Goodberries, and set their sights on the next job.
The party arrived in Humbleton to find Edith's candy cottage engulfed in flames. Thorik rushed inside to rescue Edith, enduring the heat and falling debris while the rest of the party organized a bucket brigade to save the structure. Once the fire was contained, Edith hired the group to investigate the origin of the blaze. After gathering rumors at the Bent Nail—including a peculiar sighting of a golden lizard heading north—the party discovered a charred bun behind the shop that pointed directly to Fill Flourforge. Upon confronting the baker, he admitted to harboring a tiny gold dragon named Briochebane, whose fiery nature may have accidentally ignited the cottage. Fill provided bait buns and a substantial reward for the dragon's safe return, and the party prepared to venture into the northern woods and swamp.
NOTE: this Chapter 01 recap was not recorded. It was later added as a "transcript" to get it's info into the campaign. Six sellslingers—Torvin Deepdelver, Thorik Boulderbreaker, Aragog, Ostran, Vel, and Q—answered Redwood Watch’s call to investigate vanished villagers and a blight afflicting the nearby grove. After receiving hospitality from the settlement, where Thorik connected with the children, they entered the corrupted woodland. They found missing council member Armin Whisperwind and learned that he and other elves had been forced to protect a dragon below the grove. In the poisonous, root-bound lair of the dead ancient dragon Death at Sunset, the party rescued the elves and defeated her living wyrmling offspring, Sunset Is Nigh. His defeat broke the draconic corruption, the grove began to heal, and the rescued villagers returned home. Celebrated as heroes in Redwood Watch, the party concluded the adventure and traveled onward through Silvermarch toward their next job.
