DM Scribe alternative: Discord recording with Recap Raven

If your campaign runs on Discord, Recap Raven records the game where you already play. It keeps speakers distinct and delivers a player-safe recap back to the group, with private GM feedback available on Premium.

DM Scribe and Recap Raven both turn recorded sessions into campaign records you can return to. We make Recap Raven. This comparison uses DM Scribe’s published features and prices, checked on 17 October 2026; we have not run the two products against the same recordings.

Record directly in Discord and keep speakers distinct

Recap Raven records directly in your Discord voice channel, accepts Craig recordings and pasted transcripts, and can create recaps from your written session notes to bring it up to speed with a campaign already in progress. You can start the session where your group already plays, then have the recap delivered back to Discord.

DM Scribe’s browser recorder captures your device’s microphone. It suits a group sitting around the same table. It does not capture Discord or other system audio, and DM Scribe explicitly says it has no Discord bot. For online games, its recording guide recommends using Craig and uploading the resulting file.

DM Scribe also accepts audio and video uploads, up to 500 MB and eight hours. Its own Craig guide notes that a 4-hour FLAC or WAV mix can exceed that upload limit. A smaller, lossy export sacrifices some audio quality to reduce file size. Recap Raven imports lossless FLAC audio directly from Craig. Simply paste your Craig link and you’re done. Raven handles the rest.

DM Scribe’s transcripts have timestamps but no speaker labels. Recap Raven’s separate Discord speaker tracks support speaker attribution and words-by-speaker charts showing how the spotlight is shared around your table, including on Free.

For a Discord campaign, our recording guide takes you through Raven’s bot commands and a short rehearsal before game night.

From the last dice roll to a recap in Discord

Recap Raven handles the recording files for you, leaving you more time with your group after the game. That also helps on slower connections: uploading a 500 MB file at 5 Mbps takes about 13 minutes 20 seconds under ideal conditions, before processing begins. With Raven’s Discord bot or Craig link import, there is no large recording file to upload from your device.

Compare the four routes below after initial setup. DM Scribe’s browser recorder captures an in-person table through a microphone; the other routes record your Discord game.

Turn the recording into campaign records and next-session prep

Both tools give you an editable campaign reference. DM Scribe builds wiki entries for NPCs, places and factions, tracks aliases and proposes duplicate merges for review. Recap Raven’s Campaign World also keeps campaign entries and relationships together, with a dictionary, aliases and spelling suggestions you approve.

Already keep your campaign in Obsidian or Foundry VTT? Recap Raven’s Obsidian plugin and Foundry VTT plugin bring player-safe recaps into the tools you use at the table. DM Scribe’s public features and FAQ pages do not list equivalent plugins at the time of our review.

DM Scribe’s recaps include a narrative summary, session detail and hooks for the next game. You can change the length and tone, edit the summary and restore earlier versions. A player-copy option leaves out its GM-facing sections before you paste it into your group chat.

Recap Raven combines player-safe recaps with private GM feedback, participation charts and scene-energy analysis on Premium. Memory adds automatic Campaign World and quest updates, campaign prep advice and private planning through Ask. You can edit campaign records and add your own GM notes on Free.

Both can answer campaign questions with sources

DM Scribe’s Ask Your Campaign draws on transcripts, wiki entries, recaps and relationships. Its answers include links to the supporting campaign material, and its documentation says it reports when it cannot find an answer. All plans include questions, with a daily allowance that grows on paid plans.

Recap Raven’s Searchable Memory provides answers backed by transcript quotes and evidence links. It says when the saved record does not support an answer. New accounts can try it with their Premium + Memory welcome sessions. Paid Memory plans include an Ask allowance that scales with your plan tier.

Try asking where an old promise came from, then open the source. Our campaign-memory guide shows the questions this can help with between sessions.

Compare the allowance with your actual schedule

DM Scribe counts transcription hours. Recap Raven counts sessions with a duration limit. A weekly three-hour game and an occasional long one-shot will use those allowances differently.

Keep player sharing separate from private prep

DM Scribe offers a read-only shared wiki with private GM notes excluded. Recap Raven routes player-safe recaps to Discord and offers a free, opt-in public Campaign Showcase that shares only player-safe details. You can turn off automatic Discord publishing if you want to review each recap first.

Ask the group before recording or sharing its campaign. Recap Raven deletes audio as soon as reasonably possible after transcription and does not use your campaign content to train AI. Recap Raven’s privacy policy explains how it handles recordings, transcripts, private GM notes and deletion. DM Scribe’s privacy policy covers its audio and transcript processing, export options and deletion controls. Whichever tool you choose, check what the player view contains before sending the link.

Our campaign-sharing guide shows what a published Raven campaign looks like and how to keep GM material separate.
