DMs & players

Is there room for players to respond?

The GM plays many roles, so equal speaking shares are not the goal. Word share helps you notice how much space narration and explanation leave for player discussion.

Who speaks?

Average word share per session, with GM and player roles matched.

46.2%DM / GM words
DM / GM
46.2%
Players combined
53.8%

Each eligible session contributes equally. Words describe the conversation, not who made the decisions.

Compare who is speaking, not who is enjoying the game or making the decisions.

What this measures

For sessions with both roles matched, divide GM words by matched GM and player words. Average session percentages so longer sessions do not dominate. The player share is everyone else combined.

Player share of timed speech

Share of attributed speaker duration

53%

Speech duration answers a different question from word count. Do not subtract the two to infer pauses or interruptions.

What this measures

Use valid positive speaker timings. Overlapping tracks can exceed elapsed recording time. This uses timing-eligible sessions, which may differ from the word-share sample.

Typical table size (including GM)

Median · including the GM

5 people

This includes the GM: a five-person table has one GM and four identified players.

What this measures

Count matched player speakers plus the GM in sessions with both roles identified, then take the median across sessions. This uses speakers identified in recordings; silent or unmatched participants may be missing.

Compare with a group size closer to your own before deciding whether your GM share feels unusually high.

What this measures

Group sessions by matched player-speaker count, excluding the GM, then average the GM word share within each group. These are observed speaker groups, not complete attendance records.
